Why East Midlands Airport ?

Since its opening in April 1965 East Midlands Airport (EMA) has encouraged the development of a thriving and balanced air cargo community. In doing so, the Airport has recognised the need for a comprehensive range of facilities and air cargo infrastructure which have been provided through a combination of private and public capital.

The Airport Company’s Air Cargo Policy seeks to develop further air cargo and operational facilities to support the continued growth of a broad range of air cargo activities.

Location
Location is one of the most important considerations of the air cargo operator and this is an area where East Midlands Airport scores top marks. Centrally located in the United Kingdom, the Airport possesses direct and immediate access to the UK’s premier motorway, the M1. Junction 24 is less than two miles away, linked to the Airport by the A453, the majority of which is dual carriageway. The M/A42 from Birmingham joins the M1 within a mile of the Airport at Junction 23A and the Stoke-Derby (M6-M1) trunk road joins the M1 at Junction 24.

EMA has direct motorway or trunk road access to every major city in the country, enabling operators to provide effective pick-up and delivery services from London and Bristol in the south to Manchester and Newcastle in the north. Nearly 90% of the landmass of England & Wales is within a 4 hour truck (55 mph) drivetime of EMA.

Already one of the UK’s premier air cargo gateways, EMA possesses all the characteristics required of an Airport by today’s service oriented, cost conscious air cargo operator. Our central UK position, ideal motorway connections, high quality and modern operational facilities, excellent weather record and established scheduled cargo feeder routes all combine to offer maximum benefit to the air cargo operator.

If it’s an air/road/rail hub you need, then EMA can offer that too, with Inter-City main line railway stations at Derby, Nottingham, Leicester and, nearer still, Loughborough. High frequency services direct to London and many other UK cities are available. A new “Parkway” station is to be built shortly on the London <> Derby/Nottingham Main Line near Ratcliffe-on-Soar less than four miles from EMA. It will be linked to the Airport by a high frequency shuttle bus.

Expertise
From the day the Airport opened in 1965, its advantages as an air cargo gateway have been obvious. Consequently, a pool of cargo-related companies with skilled labour have established themselves on the Airport. This has led to East Midlands Airport becoming the largest pure cargo and mail airport in the UK, handling 30.6% (Jan-Dec 2005) of the UK’s total "pure freight" and 20.2% (Jan-Dec 2005) of the UK's total "pure mail". When "bellyhold" cargo is taken into account, EMA is the UK's 2nd busiest cargo gateway with a market share of 11.1% (behind Heathrow 53.0% but above London-Stansted 9.7%, London-Gatwick 8.9% and Manchester 5.7%). EMA is now the 12th largest cargo airport in Europe and 58th in the World.
(Cargo = freight+mail ; "pure freight or mail" = freight or mail carried on dedicated aircraft ; "bellyhold = cargo carried on passenger aircraft))

Aviation Solutions and Penauille Servisair possess a wealth of cargo aircraft handling experience and expertise, providing airlines and operators with services that are second to none. Equipment is available to handle aircraft up to and including wide bodied freighters such as the B747F and AN-124 Ruslan. The mighty 600 tonne, six-engined AN-225 has now visited the airport twice on commercial services. Cargo airlines using East Midlands Airport have the freedom to choose their handling agent, ensuring the highest levels of service at all times.

Extensive aircraft engineering facilities are also available at the Airport, enabling a wide range of aircraft types to be maintained. Further information is available from bmi british midland.

EMA provides the air operator with services that encompass every aspect of cargo movement. To further ensure that the whole air cargo operation runs as smoothly as possible, all parties concerned with the movement of air freight at EMA meet when required at the East Midlands Airport Freight Liaison Group.

With its ideal location, extensive range of facilities, excellent weather record and a positive commitment to future cargo development, EMA can fulfill all your cargo gateway requirements.

Accommodation
East Midlands Airport is dedicated to promoting the growth of cargo by providing the widest range of facilities.

The Cargo Village is located in "Cargo East", a short distance from the eastern cargo apron and features warehousing and office units of varying size, totalling approximately 140,000 sq.ft. A two storey Cargo Office Block is located immediately opposite the Penauille Servisair Transit Shed, providing 12,500 sq. ft. of office accommodation. Immediately alongside the eastern cargo apron are four cargo terminals, which provide over 225,000 sq.ft of airside warehousing and office accommodation. Cargo Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5 house the hub operations of UPS, TNT and Royal Mail.

Approximately 20,000 sq.ft of additional office accommodation is accompanied by a number of privately funded warehouse / office units. Starter units are also available to cargo-related companies.

The potential for further purpose built cargo accommodation is enormous with large areas of undeveloped airside and landside real estate owned by the Airport Company. This land provides ideal sites to accommodate the expansion of existing tenants and new operators wishing to locate at EMA for the first time. If you are looking to set up an office on the airport site, please contact property@eastmidlandsairport.com

Currently vacant cargo accommodation can be found on our dedicated "property to let" website page.

Cargo West is a new complex developed jointly by EMA and DHL Aviation. Its heart is a 350,000sq ft sorting facility, 90,000 sq. ft 3 storey office block and 120,000 sq. ft loading dock. The development can accommodate 16 aircraft of varying size, from Boeing 747 to Boeing 737. The truck dock has room for 35 vehicle with remote spaces for a further 35. Over 650 car parking spaces for staff have also been provided. This joint venture is the first of its kind in the UK.

Facilities
East Midlands Airport has built a reputation as the premier cargo airport north of London. Extensive dedicated cargo facilities and a long association with traditional and innovative freight activities ensure that cargo is handled efficiently and effectively.

The 2,893 x 60m (9,492 x 197ft) runway is capable of handling all current commercial aircraft to most long haul destinations. The Airport’s excellent weather record and CAT IIIb ILS system ensure that poor weather conditions rarely interfere with air operations. Planning permission is currently being sought to extend to 3,083m / 10,115 feet.

The 60,000 sq.m eastern cargo apron offers 10 aircraft stands for AN124, B747, B767 and B737 aircraft. One AN124/B747 stand has a nose tether point.

The 160,000 sq.m western cargo apron offers up to 16 stands for AN124, B747, B767 and B737 aircraft. One AN124 and two B747 stands have nose tether points.

East Midlands Airport has full CAA approval to handle the AN225 Myira – the world’s largest cargo aircraft which has a wingspan larger than the Airbus A380 - which first visited the airport in November 2005 operating the UK's first commercial flight of the aircraft (see "news" item). It has since visited in October 2006 and November 2007.

Border Inspection Post
The on-site EU Approved Border Inspection Post (BIP) is available 24/7/365 for the clearance of animal products, both ambient and temperature controlled, arriving in the UK from third (non-EU) countries. The facility is operated by the Environmental Health Department of North West Leicestershire District Council.

The 4,500 sq.ft facility has a cold storage capacity of around 40 cu.m but this can easily be expanded at short notice to cater for long-term scheduled requirements.

The BIP is not approved for the importation of live animals from non-EU countries.

See "border inspection post" page.

Transit Sheds
International cargo may be handled through our purpose built independently operated airside and remote Transit Sheds. Long term plans to increase the size of the transit sheds will be implemented when demand necessitates.
